Setting

The beach and what lies below.

Orpheus: You can see the sky at night! It is filled with dots like the pinpricks on a player piano, shining through brightly on us. It sounds like beautiful music

The two lovers dance in the calming ocean waves

Eurydice: You think we should be here right now? Shouldn't we go?

Orpheus: We must! But I don't want to, I want to tie your hair into the starlight, so that you can feel the stars touch your soft head. But let's go!

He leaves quickly, eurydice trips and calls out

Eurydice: Wait! Love of my heart!

An interesting man enters

Man: Shall I help you?

Eurydice: You really shouldn't, I have a boyfriend.

Man: A boyfriend?

Eurydice: A fiance

Man: A fiance?

Eurydice: He seems to have run off

Man: Not a very good fiance.

Eurydice: No not at all.

Man: You should come swimming with me instead!

Eurydice: Oh I couldn't, I'll get my clothes wet.

Man: Do not worry, you won't feel it at all

Eurydice:  The water?

Man: You won't be wet! only cool, and calm. Held on all sides. See! Feel.

He holds her hand and puts it in the water.

Eurydice: I can do that.

Man: Good! Safe journey.

She walks into the water and the lights go down

An elevator door opens up, water falling from above as Eurydice walks into the underworld. The sound of a train is heard and the stone poke out their heads

Stones: Hello! You are now drip, drip, dripped, below the ground. In the earth. Calm and quiet. You will not need your head here, for we are so calm and peaceful.

Eurydice: You are not as cool and calm as I had hoped

Stones: You will not need your hope here

The stones roll off stage

Eurydice: Well ok then

The Father enters

Father: Hello? Who are you?

Eurydice: Dad?

Father: Eurydice!

Eurydice: How, do you remember me?

Father: I have held onto your name.

They embrace, you see Orpheus on a dock

Orpheus: My words are full of flowers, but they are black for I am sad. I will find my love, for my song is that beautiful, now that I have it written and the skill to play it. The sadness to make it sing, to open the door to the depths of the darkness wherein my Eurydice lies.

The following is a scene where the father builds a house out of string for his daughter. She sits in it. This can take some time.

Eurydice: Do we have anything to read?

Father: What can we do but sit and talk.

Stones: You have done too much already! You have built a house? You have talked of books and the past? There is no Past, only stone and drip and cold. Forget your past and embrace your future.

Father: I will pass, so long as my daughter is here

Orpheus enters

Orpheus: Hey Eurydice! I sang a song, and the door opened up and I can bring you home!

Eurydice: I love you dad, but I have to go!

Father: Ok.

Orpheus and Eurydice exit

Stones: So, do you have any questions now?

Father: Just with the water?

Stones: Yes and you will embrace your future, and become stone like us

Father: Whew. Ok then

Father pours water on himself and lies down like a stone. Shift scene to Orpheus and Eurydice who have been blocked by the man

Man: You can not take her.

Orpheus: You said that I could!

Man: But you had to make your way from the underworld and not look at her face

Eurydice: But he didn't

Orpheus:(looking back at her) Yeah!

Man: Hate to see it folks

Orpheus: What?

The man slams orpheus into the elevator and slaps the up button.

Man: Go on back to your little house of string now, see what is left for you there

Eurydice rushes back to the house to find her father, now a stone

Stone: You know what you are going to do now!

Eurydice touches her fathers face, and then goes to the water and douses herself as well. The Man Rides a tricycle in the background as she turns to stone
