Dreams

By Daniel Brothers

For my brother Robby,

“I left a steady plane for worlds of uncertainty
I miss the sureness of my feet, but god…
...what wonders there are to see”

Setting:

A bedroom, and also an empty pool. Both are visible throughout although focus is largely on the empty pool downstage through the show.

1 Sleeping: 1, but asleep on their bed upstage
1; 1, but not asleep
2; 2, also not asleep

At rise: There is a faint light of moonlight on 1 sleeping, and a simple area of light splashes on the empty pool downstage where 1 and 2 are laughing.

1: I know! I just couldn't keep a straight face

2: That is. The most savage thing i have ever heard. there is not other word for it

1: Like I can get behind the over dramatic "Goodbye forever" But Then being like "goodbye forever, but I need to take a pee first"

2: was this at her place or his?

1: Her place!

2: My guy. That is just not the move.

1: Not the move at all.

2: No

1: Good story though

2: Yeah! Seems like a funny guy

1: Yeah I'm glad I met him. Perks of knowing the bartender

2: Dude yeah, want some food?

1: Of course

Food appears and they begin eating. What is
important is that the apperation is done without
ceremony or acknowledgment. The food simply
did not exist before they were eating it.
1: How have you been?

2: About as well as you'd expect. It's be a rough transition

1: Yeah. It's hard to be so far away from family

2: Harder to be close somtimes too

1: Hah! Yeah that's fair. [pause] Mom's been taking it hard

2: I was wondering when she would get all empty nester

1: Dude me too. I was expecting to find like 3 dogs when I came home from college

2: Yeah.

1: But hey they like being able to go out to eat which is fair, dinner for 2 at Biaggio's costs as much as dinner for 5 at Apple Bees.

2: yeah

1: What's up. Are you alright?

2: Yeah. Yeah. I'm ok. Just can't stay long. (nervously taps watch) I'm on borrowed time right now

1: I know, I know. I just never get to see you

2: Borrowed time.

They share a very breif smile, and go into a long hug.

1: I miss you

2: I miss you too.

The light on the empty pool downstage fades.
Focus turns to the light on 1 Sleeping upstage.
They awake in tears. Turn over and kneeling
put their head in the pillow.

1 Sleeping: Come back. Let me go back.

They take a moment. Then they put
themselves together ever so slightly.
Get up, and leave the stage.
